Poster: Design and Visual Presentation
In spring 2019 I taught DES2101, Design and Visual Presentation. At the same time, I was also a student in ARTS 5890, 3D Modeling and Fabrication. For the final project in the ARTS course, I was required to use two digital fabrication technologies in tandem to create art.
I made this poster for the final, intended to promote the course I taught. I used a CNC router to produce a print block, pulled prints off the block onto paper, then added text and images to those prints using a laser cutter. The result is visually striking; the paper is lightly burned and textured. This particular paper was heavy-weight printing paper.
The design is an abstraction of computer parts, which seemed appropriate as the focus of the curriculum of the DES2101 course is an introduction to the Adobe Creative Cloud software.
This was an experimental work; the techniques employed are very labor intensive and perhaps not conducive to modern poster requirements. As a piece of art, it juxtaposes old and new methods of production in an interesting way. Quick and easy digital production and replication eschewed for a one-of-a-kind work made manually.
